Skoly, an East Greenwich oral surgeon and longtime district resident known for prior legal challenges to state COVID-19 mandates, benefits from established local networks and party organizational support in a low-turnout primary. Mellor, a self-funded businessman and Marine veteran who recently returned to Rhode Island, trails despite substantial campaign spending and an endorsement from former national security advisor Michael Flynn. An early August poll showed Skoly ahead among decided voters amid high undecided numbers, while a scheduled September 4 debate and ongoing early voting could still influence final margins in this two-candidate contest.
